Title of report proposal: An investigation of awareness among cafeteria operators and students at Kolej Kediaman 2, UMP about bad effects of using polystyrene as food container.
Date of submission: 20 July 2009
INTRODUCTION
We conduct this study to realize cafeteria operators and students at Kolej Kediaman 2, UMP about bad effects of using polystyrene food container to their health and environment. For this time, all cafeteria operators at Kolej Kediaman 2, UMP use polystyrene as food container.
BACKGROUND
This study will explore what is the level of awareness about bad effect of polystyrene to environment and human among the community at Kolej Kediaman 2 (KK2), especially the UMP students. Polystyrene is the most material that use as food container or beverage around the country. There are more disadvantages of polystyrene compare than the advantages. Maybe polystyrene helps us a lot in doing packaging or use as food container, but the material that consists in polystyrene is non-biodegradable, means that the polystyrene can’t be recycled. So it is so dangerous to let the polystyrene place everywhere in our land or environment. Besides that, it also brings effect to human. In polystyrene manufacturing, to produce polystyrene need the human workers, as the workers expose to the toxic air that produce from fabrication process, it will affect their health especially hard to breath. People around the country may have less information about the effect of polystyrene. So, we were doing this study to spread the information about the effect and damage that can bring by polystyrene.
OBJECTIVE
Reserach Objective
1. To find out the sensitivity level among cafeteria operators and students at Kolej Kediaman 2,UMP about the bad effect of polystyrene food container usage for their life and environment.
2. To investigate the quantity/amount of polystyrene (food container) that are use averagely for 1 semester studies.
Research Question
1. Do UMP students and cafeteria operators at Kolej Kediaman 2 knows about bad effect of polystyrene to the environment.
2. Do UMP students and cafeteria operators at Kolej Kediaman 2 cares about the environment after they know polystyrene can bring much effect to the environment.
3. What kind of products can replace polystyrene as food container.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
Polystyrene: Polystyrene is a polymer of styrene and a rigid transparent thermoplastic. "expanded polystyrene looks like a rigid white foam and is used as packing or insulation".
Environment: Environment can be consists of water, air and land. Polystyrene is one of the products that can bring bad effect to the environment. This shows why polystyrene and environment are related with each other.
The article is explained about the bad effect that can bring by polystyrene to the environment. Polystyrene is petroleum based plastic basically made from the styrene monomer. Polystyrene is very light product and variety of products is made from polystyrene that keep our beverages hot or cold. Polystyrene give much bad impact to the environmental, even to the workers that produce a product that using polystyrene like the manufacture field. There are many factory that manufacture of plastics, rubber and resins exposed to the bad effect of manufacture polystyrene. About 90,000 workers, including those who make boats, tubs and showers, are potentially exposed to styrene. Polystyrene also effect the food by produce the toxic chemical especially when the polystyrene heated together with the food in a microwave.

The author is a environmentalist that make studies about Styrofoam Food Containers, Styrene Migration and Your Health. From the studies, the hypothesis strongly showed that the usage of polystyrene food containers really give bad effect to human health.Studies suggest that styrene mimics estrogen in the body and can therefore disrupt normal hormone functions, possily contributing to thyroid problems, menstrual irregularities, and other hormone-related problems, as well as breast cancer and prostate cancer when you use the polysyrene as food container.

The conclusion for this article is the polystyrene usage is not for health. This is because the container made from polystyrene has showed that 45 out of 47 containers have at least one chemical detected in their leachate. The level of styrene monomer is not good for health.

The author explain about used polystyrene especially festival and specific funtion in we country malaysia, when have a festival or caremony, many polystrene used.so automaticly polution will happen because polystrene is not recycle material. At oversea country, they have many reseach about dangerous using polystrene in our live.example danger for nutrition and effect of environmental polution. The consumers association of penang (CAP) urge all partes including ministry to stop using polystrene in all we activiti.
DATA COLLECTION METHOD
For our study, we have chosen the survey method as the methodology. This survey will conduct within one to two weeks. The respondent would be the community at Kolej Kediaman 2 (KK2), specially the students that always buy food from the cafeteria. We will give the questionnaire randomly to 80 students. In the questionnaire, there will be 2 sections that consist of 13 questions that need to answer. The questionnaire that we have made is regarding to the research objective of the study. All the questionnaire will be collected immediately after respondent finish answer the question. From the entire collected questionnaire, we will gather the data and transfer the data to the table that consists of quantity of respondents and quantity of variables in our questionnaire.
